Better yet, revisit whether additional dedicated circuits or outlets in the right locations could eliminate the need for floor-level power strips in your main living areas.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"border-border-200 border-t-0.5 my-3 mx-1.5\" \/>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\"><strong>GFCI Protection in the Right Places<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\">Ground fault circuit interrupters are the outlets with the test and reset buttons, required in bathrooms, kitchens, garages, and outdoor locations wherever water and electricity might intersect. They cut power in milliseconds when they detect current leaking outside the intended circuit path \u2014 exactly the scenario that occurs when a person (including a small child) becomes part of the circuit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\">The question worth asking in a home with young children isn&#8217;t just whether you have GFCI outlets where they&#8217;re required \u2014 it&#8217;s whether they&#8217;re actually working. GFCI outlets can fail silently. They&#8217;ll continue to provide power while the protection mechanism no longer functions. Every GFCI outlet in your home should be tested periodically using the test and reset buttons. If it doesn&#8217;t trip and reset correctly, it needs to be replaced.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\">Also worth checking: any GFCI outlets that protect downstream receptacles. In many installations, a single GFCI outlet protects multiple standard outlets on the same circuit.
